In association with ARA Architects, Bellingham, Washington

miyoshi613While far from its native country of Japan, this 3200 sq. ft. restaurant successfully blends the tradition of Japanese dining with America’s commercial culture. Simple in both plan and elevation, the budget conscious design nonetheless sheds some light on what it means to eat in Japan. As project manager for ARA Architects of Bellingham, Washington, these program requirements suggested a straightforward approach. The building’s exterior was designed to blend with the regional architecture of the Northwest, and the neighborhoods nearby. On the interior, much attention was directed to the details of Japanese purity and custom. The light maple trim throughout, and simple geometry of spaces such as the bar and private dining areas provide for the Japanese qualities of calmness and purpose.
